The Good Things Jar

August 19, 2018

A few years ago, I was reading a blog about a woman who had started collecting little notes throughout the year in a jar about each of the good things that had happened to her. At the end of the year, she would open the jar and read through all of the amazing things and be reminded of how blessed her life was.

I promptly decided to do the same thing and rather than worrying about making the perfect jar with a hand painted “good things” title on it, I grabbed the first thing I had which was an oversized plastic pickle jar. Those labels never come off without soaking so I just put a piece of masking tape across the middle of the label and wrote “good things” in sharpie on it. I was so excited that I decided to write out a couple of really good things that had already happened that year.

At the end of that first year, I had a really full jar and I was excited to read all of the notes inside. I decided to wait until the beginning of the new year instead of at the end of the year I was in. I thought this would spur on good thoughts and momentum for the new year. Reading back through that first batch was incredible. It warmed my heart, some of them made me cry (happy tears), and all of them reminded me of how truly lucky my life has been and that even though there are bad things and unfortunate incidents, that in the end all that matters are the Good Things.

I’ve kept up the jar and am in my third year of collecting the good things in my life in note form. I read them out loud with my love so that we both get to share in the warm fuzzy feelings. I can’t wait to read this year’s notes in 2019!

How about it? Would you create a Good Things jar? I’d love to see a picture of yours if you do! Send me an email or leave a note in the comments.
