251 Illustrations in Two Years

In December of 2019, I purchased an iPad and Apple Pencil as a Christmas gift to myself. I had been spending a lot of my free time drawing and I wanted to have the ability to not only draw anywhere I go but also to be able to take those drawings and translate them into product designs for the items in my boutique.

I played around with the Apple Pencil, trying to get the hang of it for about a month but it wasn’t until I joined the “Daily Creating Group” on Facebook that I began drawing every day. I drew every single day from January 2020 to December 2021 and in that time, I drew 251 illustrations – most of them stacks with multiple, detailed illustrations within each of them.

Chicken Stack Illustration art by Blume Bauer

My first illustrations were based on prompts from the group. Like this Chicken Stack - it was the first prompt that I drew from the group. I had originally drawn the Chickens on the ground but it was missing that whimsy I was looking for in my art. Then I had the thought to stack them on top of each other. The more I stacked up, the bigger my smile. By the end of choosing which chicken went where and how their legs would stand upon the chicken beneath them, I was laughing and having so much fun! It brought me joy and I thought that maybe it would bring others joy to create these silly stacks.

From then on, I’ve been obsessed. I stack everything and everything is a stack. Even when I stack cups in the cupboard, I think “Hey, a stack!” I was drawing every single day and then I don’t know what happened but I stopped. I’ve had fits and starts since then and still draw a few times a month, but nothing like my determined daily drawing habit that I had created.

I’m going to strive to get back on track in 2024. I want to create every day. It might be drawing, it might be crafting, painting, or even crocheting, but I want to create every day again. It brought me so much joy to bring the ideas in my head to life. I want to find that joy again in 2024. Who’s with me? Do you have an art goal for 2024? Let me know in the comments. We can keep each other accountable!

Love you all so much, sweet friends. Have a very happy holiday and a wonderful New Year ahead!
