Artist of the Month: Jennifer JL Jones

My love of abstract art really drew me to Jennifer JL Jones’ work. Her mixed media pieces are large and evoke emotion, draw on memories, and spark imagination. It’s no wonder there are so many feelings brought up by her work, the pieces are created as she has searched her heritage and ancestry exploring the colors and shapes that represent her familial locations.

Jones works in layers to create depth in her organic creations. I love the way paint gives a push and pull feeling when it is layered in the manner that she uses. I feel pulled in by portions of the paintings and pushed away or back to other spots in the painting as my eyes travel the entire scene. If you get the opportunity to view her works in person, I’m positive there is even more to explore in terms of texture and light washes “behind” the main scenes of her work.

Below are a few of my favorite paintings by Jones and an image of her with her pieces in a gallery so that you get a feeling for the size of them. I really believe that size plays a large role in the power of a painting. It can be teeny tiny to draw us in closer or large and expressive like these to envelop us and make us think.

Jennifer JL Jones Bio:

Jennifer J L Jones (b.1971 Virginia) is an American artist raised in rural Virginia and on the central east coast of Florida. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois. An exploration of beauty and energy, Jones’ mixed media paintings are a meditation on the dichotomy of the existence of nature both as corporeal reality and intangible spirituality. Employing multiple layers of abstraction and combined mediums including a refined glazing technique, she creates rich, organic patinas that evoke universal emotional and physical connecting points for the observer. Layers of paint create a palimpsest quality to the work, elegant, ever-shifting paintings combining a poetic, sensual grace with consistently bold execution.

Jones’ long-established career is highlighted by exhibitions in select national and international galleries, including a 2013 group exhibition in Paris, France (in association with Besharat Gallery in Barbizon, France and the Taylor Foundation), as well as numerous solo and group exhibitions across the U.S. Her highly sought paintings can be found in many private and corporate collections worldwide such as the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, Oprah Winfrey/Harpo Studios, Scana Energy, the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, Portugal, and Burj Khalifa in UAE. Her most recent commissioned paintings are in the office of the President at Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia, the Baptist Medical Center in Jacksonville, Florida and the Mayo Clinic, Jacksonville, Florida. Recent and upcoming events include her November 2017 solo exhibition, LURE OF HALCYON at New River Fine Art and the artist’s first museum exhibition, Sender – Recipient at the Loukia & Michael Zampelas Art Museum, Nicosia Cyprus, January 2018.

Jones currently resides in Port Royal, South Carolina and is working on her second coffee table book and compilation memoir.
