Marketing for Artists

Let's face it, as artists we just want to create all day, every day. While we can and should create often and as much as possible, if we want to sell our art, we've got to market and promote it to the public. The good news is that the internet makes that easier than it used to be in the days of hitting the streets, walking into galleries and begging them to show your art. Now we have the ability to share our art with the world via social media and our websites with or without the approval of the "art world". I think that is pretty darn exciting!

As a marketer in my past–life with Kodak, I carried those marketing tools over into running my own businesses. My time at Kodak gave me a love and excitement for marketing that most artists do not typically have. I have spent the years since working for them, researching, reading, taking webinars, and gleaning information on how to get my art out to the world. And I love sharing that information with other artists. Helping them to market their art and show their passion to the world!

Before you dive in, I have two important words that I hope will linger with you for many years to come – be PROLIFIC and CONSISTENT. No amount of marketing success can surpass these two things. If you make work often and lots of it and you are consistent at sharing your work, then you will always be ahead of the game. Every artist I see out there on Instagram, Society6, Pinterest, and Facebook that is successful has these two things in common - they are always prolific and they are consistent in their posts. Now that you have the secret to success as an artist (and possibly any field out there), please enjoy yourself as you peruse my tips and tricks that have worked for myself and other artists over the years!

Make a post that no one saw? No likes, no comments, just sitting there, lonely with no interaction?

If it's been over an hour, there are two things you can do to try to salvage some interaction with the post:

1. Like/heart/wow your own post and cross your fin...

If you’re on Instagram, then you might have noticed that instead of being all about that bass, Instagram loves hashtags!

There are so many opinions out there on how to use hashtags. Some say to use all 30 every post (30 is the maximum number allowed in a post), others s...

Facebook has a "Shop" tab for pages and while the Facebook message I received after I added my first product said that it will be shown to millions of people around the world, it didn’t seem to go that far. Actually, they didn’t seem to go anywhere. Each product got a...

I was working on my new store for my website and I remembered something that a marketer said in a class once years ago. Someone had asked about the "buy now" type of buttons. The question was, do I make them look graceful and match my website or do I go crazy and make...

I am constantly raving about Unsplash and the amazing photographers they have on their website. Not only do they offer beautiful free images, but they offer them free to use for commercial use. This is fantastic benefit! That means you can use them in your blog, in you...

Do you use Facebook groups for your biz?

I have found that it’s a lot more fun than a page in a lot of ways. People get into groups more than they do with following pages and you can run contests, host silly games, do polls, and more! Facebook groups are a great way to...

Design Tip: What's the difference between a PNG and a JPG?

I was just saving a file as a PNG and thought I'd share this tip with you. A JPG file degrades each time it is re-saved. This means that the image loses pixels each time it's re-saved, re-uploaded, re-used. Over...

Have you tested out the Facebook Cover Slideshow on your page? Granted, the slideshow is a slide-it-yourself-show, it doesn’t auto-play or even have a play button (yet), but I’ve noticed that by using it instead of the one photo cover photo, it gets a lot more views th...

Have you ever noticed that there was a switch years ago in what people looked for in a brand? They look for similarities to them. This is a great thing for entrepreneurs because it means there is more room for like-minded products.

For example, let's say that you make h...
